From the forge we evolved to automated die forging; after various phases of gravity casting, to low pressure die casting; from taxing manual polishing to robotic polishing; from practically alchemistic processes of surface coating to modern electroplating and PVD with titanium and zirconium deposit.
The commercial path was also an amazing journey.
Initially the Portuguese market, then expanding to the former Portuguese colonies and northern Africa and later Japan, United States, Australia, Great Britain and others.
To the door fittings, which we later enhanced with access control systems, we added bathroom taps and accessories as well as sanitary ware, in an array of interplaying household products produced in eight factory units.

Three tips for managing design or three tips to drive a centenary company to the 21st century?
1) DESIGN as a “tool” to position the company values on the market, society and to meet the shareholders goals.
2) DESIGN as a “lens” to understand consumer needs, behaviour and expectations.
3) DESIGN as a “process” to build a strong corporate identity by moulding the markets, the products, the communication, spaces, and the costumer expectations.
DRIVING CHANGE THROUGH DESIGN
The development and implementation of a strong Design Department within the Company, supported by a dynamic relationship with Universities and Research Institutes, gave a new strength to the renovation of the product offer allowing the Company to have a highly proactive position, reducing substantially “time to market”.
On the other hand, it allowed the Company to constantly launch new products accommodating the shortest life cycles of the Product, driven by the Market.
EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN CO-ORDINATION
The Design Department reports to the Board of Directors. This fact allows the department much more flexibility and agility to react to market changing.
This way, the Design has a much more active role on the definition of the global product strategies and the corporate image. The structure of the communication and the design of company spaces, like booths, are conceived in a coordinated way that creates a strong identity reflected on the perceived value of the products.
STRATEGIC PERFORMANCE
For CIFIAL, the Design is the main driver of change within the Organization helping the company to achieve its strategic goals.
In the actual challenging times, with strong far east competition, the devaluation of the US currency, Design works as a trigger of the changes needed to answer to the threats and opportunities of globalization.
Internally, the performance of the department is measured by weeks to achieve different milestones. Recently we have consolidated the new corporate image, fifty weeks after the implementation of the new organization.
The renovation of all the product offer is almost done.
During the next 24 weeks we will finalize the renovation of all on-line marketing supports for the International Subsidiaries Companies.
2007 NEW STRATEGIC APPROACH
In 2007, CIFIAL implemented a major change in its organization structure. The Company was organized in two major areas – the Bathroom Area, with a clear defined Business Mission Statement “To provide INNOVATIVE and COMPLETE Bathroom Concepts and Fixtures”. The second area, the Door Area, provides INTEGRATED DOOR SYSTEMS (door hardware, access control systems and locks).
Each of these two areas adopted a hole coordinated and integrated Design Programme.
COORPORATE IDENTITY
The basis of the new coordinated image and the use of two base colours – blue and yellow - to identify the two business – BATH and DOOR - was standardize on the stationary, outdoors, packaging, fleet, and, in general, started to be adopted in all the company's messaging.
INTERIOR DESIGNThe company's identity, as well as the new image guidelines, were used on the development and manufacturing of the new spaces and decors.
More fluid spaces were conceived and the human reference was introduced with a more casual and cool presentation of the products. The shadows of all the Design Staff members were used as a reference on the door hardware panels.
GRAPHIC DESIGNAll products and company's messages follows the recently created identity.
The blue and yellow colours identify the two business areas together with the statements: “COMPLETE BATH SOLUTIONS” and “INTEGRATED DOOR SYSTEMS”.
Brochures and Price Lists were produced in accordance to the technical requests of the different markets the Company plays in.
Photography and beauty shots are used according to the specific taste of the American and European customers (the two main markets of the company).
MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION
The communication of the company's values and its products offer, made through different printed materials, followed the new strategy of organize products by clusters.
For some of the new more innovative product models, like the new TECHNO M SERIES, the Company used, for the first time, marketing materials common to all its geographic markets.
The advertising policy takes advantage of the icon products shown in the magazines of the company's market segment.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Following the strategy defined by the Board of Directors, the Company develops its products according to Portuguese Design.
On the Bath Business, taps and ceramics like TECHNO C3 (RED DOT Finalist), substantiate the mission of the business already stated “To provide INNOVATIVE and COMPLETE Bathroom Concepts and Fixtures”.
On the Door Business, new manufacturing, design and quality standards were established with the recent electronic system of access control TECHNO DS100K and the new excellent ergonomics door hardware TECHNO TH (GOOD DESIGN AWARD, IF Finalist).

document.getElementById('p3_txtinlink').innerHTML="As part of the Feel The Planet Earth Design Award, sponsored by CIFIAL, a ceremony of prize giving took place on 18 June 2008 in the White Room of old Customs Building in Porto, Portugal.
For this occasion, Professor Alexander Manu from Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto, Canada, was invited to give a lecture entitled “The Earth is your Mirror.” This was attended by about 350 designers, architects and design students.
In addition to the lecture “The Earth is your Mirror”, selected members of the Honor Committee participated in a debate centred on the theme FEEL THE PLANET EARTH and the role that design plays in these issues. The participants in the debate, in addition to Professor. Alexander Manu, were: Professor. Jan Carel Diehl, representative of the jury, coming from TU Delft University in the Netherlands; Professor. Carlos Aguiar, member of the Design Award Jury ; Peter Balona, Architect; Professor. José Manuel Mendonça and Professor. Henrique Cayatte, on behalf of the CPD.
Aside from the personalities who participated in the debate, the event was attended by:Prof. Dr. Luis Valente de Oliveira (president of the Honor Committee), Dr. Artur Santos Silva, Professor Antonio Castro Guerra (Secretary of State for Industry and Innovation), Mr. Alexandre Soares dos Santos and Dr. Antonio Barreto.
The prize was awarded to Artica Technologies Ltd, a group of British designers, for an individual project consisting of a natural ventilation system that uses less than 10 percent of the energy used by a conventional system.
The prize was also awarded to a group of designers who developed a project in conjunction with the University of Tu Delft, the Netherlands, which consists of a solar powered portable lamp for the rural population of Cambodia. In total, the value of the prize awarded was € 25,000.

A special concrete composition had to be developed for this range, finished with a protective layer to make the basin 100% water proof to avoid changes in product colour with the use of water and other products. This counter top washbasin was selected in July as a finalist for the Good Design award in Japan.

The Design Journal's ADEX award in now in it’s 15th edition and is one of the largest and most prestigious international competitions for products in the interiors / construction industry.

document.getElementById('p3_txtinlink').innerHTML="As part of the Feel The Planet Earth Design Award, sponsored by CIFIAL, a ceremony of prize giving took place on 18 June 2008 in the White Room of old Customs Building in Porto, Portugal.
For this occasion, Professor Alexander Manu from Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto, Canada, was invited to give a lecture entitled “The Earth is your Mirror.” This was attended by about 350 designers, architects and design students.
In addition to the lecture “The Earth is your Mirror”, selected members of the Honor Committee participated in a debate centred on the theme FEEL THE PLANET EARTH and the role that design plays in these issues. The participants in the debate, in addition to Professor. Alexander Manu, were: Professor. Jan Carel Diehl, representative of the jury, coming from TU Delft University in the Netherlands; Professor. Carlos Aguiar, member of the Design Award Jury ; Peter Balona, Architect; Professor. José Manuel Mendonça and Professor. Henrique Cayatte, on behalf of the CPD.
Aside from the personalities who participated in the debate, the event was attended by:Prof. Dr. Luis Valente de Oliveira (president of the Honor Committee), Dr. Artur Santos Silva, Professor Antonio Castro Guerra (Secretary of State for Industry and Innovation), Mr. Alexandre Soares dos Santos and Dr. Antonio Barreto.
The prize was awarded to Artica Technologies Ltd, a group of British designers, for an individual project consisting of a natural ventilation system that uses less than 10 percent of the energy used by a conventional system.
The prize was also awarded to a group of designers who developed a project in conjunction with the University of Tu Delft, the Netherlands, which consists of a solar powered portable lamp for the rural population of Cambodia. In total, the value of the prize awarded was € 25,000.
